When you get a hearing test, your results are plotted on a chart or graph known as an audiogram.
Audiograms plot your hearing thresholds across various frequencies. The x-axis represents frequency in Hertz from lowest to highest. The y-axis represents the loudness of a sound in decibels, with the lowest levels at the top of the graph.
Audiograms are an accurate and effective tool for quantifying the degree of hearing loss, as well as determining the type of hearing loss you have.
While the results of your first hearing test are important and help your audiologist start an initial plan, there will likely come a time when you are due for another evaluation.
Let’s examine a few questions you should ask yourself to help determine if it’s time to get a new audiogram.
How Long Have You had Your Hearing Aid?
If your device is more than five years old, there’s a chance it might not be working as well as it used to. Also, because hearing aid technology is rapidly evolving, you are likely missing out on the latest and greatest features to help maximize your hearing capabilities.
Any Changes to Your Health?
If you’ve experienced any changes to your health since the last time you had a hearing test, it may be time for a reevaluation. Certain conditions such as diabetes or heart disease may worsen your hearing loss. It’s important to check and see how your hearing health is responding to any new diagnosis.
Changes at Home or Work?
If you’re working in a louder office than you used to or if your home life has gotten more hectic due to more people staying with you, there’s a chance you need a stronger hearing aid. Call your audiologist and inform them of your changes to see if they think you should come in for an appointment.
Does Your Hearing Loss Seem Worse?
Even with hearing aids, there is a chance your hearing loss needs will change over time. If you notice that phone calls don’t sound as clear as they used to or that it’s harder to follow conversations when you are out with friends at The Camino, schedule an appointment for a hearing test.
The results of your new audiogram can help your audiologist figure out which treatment is best to meet your current hearing needs moving forward.
